Unilever has recently recalled 19 popular aerosol dry shampoos from the USA market. Actually, a chemical called benzene has been found in these shampoos, due to which it can cause cancer. Unilever said that it has carefully recalled the shampoo, although no adverse effects have been seen from it so far. The recall order comes after an observation by the US Food and Drug Administration and included products such as Nexus, Suave and Tigi, which make Rockaholic and Bed Head dry shampoo. Benzene is often called a human carcinogen and can cause cancers including leukemia and blood cancer of the bone marrow.
However, since Dove and Tresemme Shampoo are widely used in india, should indians worry?
According to reports, Hindustan Unilever, the indian arm of Unilever Plc, said that the company does not manufacture and sell dry shampoo in India. So there is nothing to panic for Indians. The company said that an independent health risk assessment has already been conducted to test the benzene levels present in the shampoos and it has been found that the benzene levels detected in these shampoos do not pose any health hazards.
As per reports, the recalled products were produced before october 2021. The company has also notified retailers to pull the affected products from the stores.
Meanwhile, FMCG major Unilever yesterday said it has witnessed strong growth in the indian market in the July-September quarter of FY23. The company said that it has achieved USG (implied sales growth) of 16.1 per cent in india in the third quarter. Unilever’s turnover in the third quarter was 15.8 billion euros and its USG increased by 10.6 percent in the quarter.
