A teacher from the Basic Primary Model School, Prem Nagar allegedly used a hand drilling machine to injure the palm of a Class V student after he failed to answer the multiplication table of two.
In a shocking incident of corporal punishment, a school teacher allegedly used a drilling machine to ‘punish’ a student after he failed to recite the multiplication table of two.
The incident happened at the Basic Primary (Government) School in the Prem Nagar area of Kanpur on Thursday.
The nine-year-old boy, a class V student, was passing through the school library when the instructor, identified as Anuj Pandey, overseeing some maintenance work there, stopped him and asked him to recite the multiplication table of two.
But when the boy failed to recite the table correctly, Pandey, reportedly hired recently from a private institute, got angry and used a power drill to punish the student.
He reportedly ran the drill machine on the boy’s left hand, leaving him injured.
The boy was saved by the quick thinking of another student who saw this and unplugged the drilling machine.
“Sir asked me to recite the table of two. But since I failed to recite the table correctly, he got angry and ran the drilling machine on my left hand. Another student who standing beside me pulled the plug out to stop the machine but by then my hand had got injured,” the boy alleged.
What is more shocking is that the school authorities and other teachers played down the incident and even tried to cover it up.
The boy was allegedly given some basic first aid and sent home by other teachers.
The teacher sent him home and he was not even given an anti-Tetanus injection immediately after the incident,” a relative of the boy alleged.
